What Are Dental Crowns Made Of?

Any time you’re getting a restorative solution designed to last well over a decade, it’s understandable you’ll want to choose carefully. Our offices in Kissimmee and Orlando offer several options for crown materials, including porcelain, IPS e.max®, and zirconia.

All of these types of crowns are made using cutting-edge materials that deliver beautiful, long-lasting results. Your dentist can explain the benefits of porcelain and ceramic crowns in more detail and recommend a dental solution that’s best for you and your circumstances.

Same-Day Porcelain Crowns With CEREC Technology

Our CEREC® system lets our dentists design and create dental prosthetics — including crowns, bridges, and more — in a single appointment. This innovative system offers a high degree of customization, ensuring that the porcelain crown we craft for you looks and feels just like your natural teeth.
In-house dental lab

Using a handheld oral scanner connected to a computer, your dentist will take a 3D digital impression of your teeth and gums. This impression is used to create a blueprint for your crown, which the milling machine uses to sculpt your crown from a block of porcelain. From there, a high-quality porcelain crown will be ready for placement in a matter of minutes. This will be your permanent restoration; thanks to CEREC, you won't need a temporary crown.

Dental Crowns Crafted In-House A Look at the Process

There's no need to fear the dental chair: we will thoroughly numb your tooth before treatment. We also offer sedation options for relieving dental anxiety.

Initial Consultation

When you visit our Orlando or Kissimmee office for the first time, your dentist will perform a thorough examination of your mouth to determine if dental crowns are right for you. If deemed necessary, they will also recommend preparatory work such as root canal therapy or gum disease treatment at this time.

Tooth Preparation

Your dentist will numb the treatment area with a local anesthetic before reshaping the tooth to ensure the dental restoration fits properly. Though this is a virtually pain-free process, if needed we offer sedation options to help relieve dental anxiety.

Digital Impressions

We take digital impressions of your mouth which are used to craft your dental crowns in our on-site lab. Digital impressions eliminate the need for messy putty impressions you may have received in the past and offer a high caliber of precision for optimal fit and function.

Temporary Crown Placement

Though our CEREC system means that you may be able to receive a permanent crown right away, in some cases you will be provided a temporary crown while waiting for your permanent restoration. This will be crafted on-site and placed before you leave our office.

Permanent Crown Placement

Once your permanent crown is ready, you’ll return to the office to swap out the temporary crown. The average lab turn-around time is 2-3 weeks, which can vary depending on case size. However, in certain situations, we can expedite cases and complete them much faster.

What About Implant-Supported Dental Crowns?

An implant-supported crown is comprised of a dental implant, a dental crown, and a connecting abutment piece to replace the entire tooth from root to chewing surface. This promotes stimulation of the jaw and avoids bone loss resulting from a missing tooth.

Implant-supported crowns require surgery to place the implant, followed by a healing period. After the implant is fully fused with the jawbone we will attach a porcelain dental crown to the implant to complete your treatment.

Since this restorative solution involves a surgical procedure and a recovery period, the timeline for implant-supported dental crowns is longer than that of a traditional crown.

Will Insurance Cover Dental Crowns?

If you’re getting a dental crown to repair a damaged tooth, insurance will most likely cover the cost of treatment. However, if the crown is being used to address a cosmetic issue, insurance will not cover the cost.

Our dentistry practice accepts most insurances and our team will work with you to maximize your benefits. Ata Dental also accepts financing through CareCredit®, which offers loans with little to no interest divided up into monthly payments to keep your out-of-pocket expenses manageable.
